Capsule Geology

The East 2 (gossan) occurrence is located between Hoodoo Creek and Confederation Glacier, about 3 kilometres north of Knight Inlet. Mineralization at East 2 is characterized by silver, gold, lead, zinc and copper mineralization associated with a variety of felsic to intermediate intrusions of the Jurassic to Tertiary Coast Plutonic Complex.

The East 2 gossan is located on a narrow north trending ridge. The gossan is a bright red to yellow colour, and it is exposed over an area of 70 by 70 metres. Red and yellow iron oxides and minor amounts of pyrolusite coat the multilithic breccia host.

Exploration work in 1980 indicated the presence of a sub-volcanic intrusive complex characterized by the following units or events, from oldest to youngest: (a) porphyritic monzonite to quartz monzonite stocks (b) multilithic intrusive breccia (monzonite) (sub-vent) (c) porphyritic monzonite dikes (d) andesite dikes (e) (f) quartz-eye porphyry - felsitic dikes pyrite and quartz-pyrite (plus copper, zinc and lead sulphide) veins. Economic sulphides appeared to be restricted to pyrite and quartz-pyrite veining. A number of gossans were found. Main gossans include the East 1, East 2, West 1, West 2. Less significant gossans were also described. The East 2 gossan is the most pronounced in sedimentation and coincides with an intrusive vent breccia. The East 2 showing has potential for extension to the east and west, and hosts significant stockwork silver, and gold mineralization.

In 1980, Energex Minerals, reported that the East 2 gossan zone contains two quartz stockwork zones up to 1 metre wide carrying significant silver mineralization, including pyrargyrite, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and pyrite (Sample G-80-218, Assessment Report 9508). One grab sample from here assayed 1521 grams per tonne silver, 1.1 grams per tonne gold, 0.57 per cent zinc and 0.21 per cent lead (Assessment Report 9508). In 1981, Energex collected further samples from the East 2 gossan obtaining similar values as to 1980.

See East 1 (092N 051) and Lancers Ridge (092N 076) for work history of the East 2 occurrence, especially in 1980, 1981, 1988, 2009, and 2021.
